Reflect on the journal " Designing CALL programs and activities"

Through the journal I got lots of informations about designing CALL programs and activities. There are some considerations for the design of CALL programs, pedagogy first and technology second, computer interactivity and pedagogical interactivity. When creating CALL programs, it would be important to remember that the element that is in control at all times should be the pedagogy, tather than technology. Technical considerations are also important, but without good-quality content and good pedagogical support, the use of advanced technology does not guarantee the success of computer-assisted learning materials. Actually, I ued to forget that important thing.

To create a multimedia CALL program it would be essential to consider: the target learners, the language level of the learners, the purpose of the program, the pedagogical approach, the appropriate use of technology, and the learning context etc. Computer interactivity refers to the functionality designed for human-to-machine interaction via computers. Pedagogical interactivity means that the nature and function of interactivity is determined by a learning theory or a pedagogical approach.

CALL programs design principles include lots of part but I found that I overlook some elemetns in my programs. First, content design would be considered brevity, comprehensibility, accuracy, interestingness, and organization. Second, visual design should include consistency, good use of space, legibility, careful use of color, contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. Also, multidedia design should be considered high-quality playback and media file size.

Reflect on the journal "Using technology to teach thinking skills

Language learners would need to be given opportunities to engage in high-level thinking learning. Technology could be used to support thinking if teachers design classrooms in which learning activities are informed by an understanding of the cognitive processes involved in language learning and thing. Also, technology would need to be examined and selected in terms of how it supports a thinking-oriented environment, that is, a constructivist learning environment where students are allowed to construct meaning for themselves and learn more deeply.

Computer technology could provide tools and programs that scaffold thinking and support collaborative problem solving. Actually, I often use some computer tools like presentation programs, word processors, sound recording and editing tools etc. I think they help learners to remember, comprehend, apply, and reflect on information through writing, sketching, or recording with multiple modalities. Also, multimedia and hypermedia environments could be interactive and afford students control over visual images, animation, sound, and text.

Acoording to this journal, thinking skills have two parts, perceptual skills and conceptual skills. The initial stage of cognitive processing requires perception. Visual perception would be inportant not only in learning technology but also in learning content and language. Visually oriented programs could help students build a visual and intuitive understnading of objects in relationship to each other and a nonverbal way to think about any concept. Beyond perception is the development of conception, that is, the mental manipulation of ideas and concepts, or the ability to form or understand mental concepts. There are two types of knowledge used in language learning, declarative and procedural knowledge. Procedural knowledge could be supported by problem-based learning and inquiry. It could be acquired by students through struggling with puzzling problems and constructing satisfying solutions for themselves. Therefore web-based learning activities could be designed to gain procedural knowledge.

Constructivism refers to the theory of learning and knowledge construction in an environment where students are afforded opportunities to construct their own meaning through student-directed interaction with rich resources and problems. Various technologies including web or computer tools could help learners to construct knowledge and support thinking and problem solving.

About CALL Tools (week 9-10)

I explored lots of CALL tools through week 9-10 tasks and found some tools might be useful in my teaching and learning.
First, I could use Padlet as a space where students are able to upload their assignments and share them effectively.
Second, I would like to apply some funny photos using manipulation tools to motivate students.
Third, socail networking could be very great for teaching and learning English. I will get lots of teaching materials, share ideas or informations, participate in some discussion and contact some people.
Also, graphic organizer resources could be applied to summary of learning. I could use mind mapping tools (gliffy or creately) in various ways like writing lesson plan, providing some workseets, and mainly organizing learning content.

Interesting Social Networking

I explored lots of the ELT groups and communities and found some interesting sites.

http://www.linkedin.com/groups/English-Teaching-Professionals-1824973?home=&gid=1824973

This is the group of English Teaching Professionals. I could see very useful discussion list related to my teaching problems. If I join and participate in this group, I will be able to get some helpful teaching information, share ideas, and improve writing skills and competence.

Learn English(Google+ community) would be a good site for practicing English. It includes 4-skill practices, grammar, vocabulary, quizzes, and discussions etc.

useful resources from feedly

I've seen lots of useful sites and posts from feedly.
In ELL video channels, I found some sites for young learners like ELF kids videos. It includes many songs children feel interesting. I would like to use these videos to motivate students and practice some words and sentences related to the lesson in my English class.

Also, I found quite attractive sites about idioms, slang, and jargon as Learn English with let's talk. It was useful to get some information about unusual language patterns and understand them better.

Reflects on the video resources

I've encountered lots of video resources in many websites.
As a English learner, I could develop my English competence through using those resources, particularly Englishcentral.com. I could learn and practice English step by step, watch the video, studying vocabularies and sentences, speaking&recording, listnening the record.
Also, I could find lots of useful videos for ESL students like Storylineonline, Bookbox etc. In my class, I've been using videos for teaching English because it is very motivating and interesting.
I would search appropriate videos for my lesson more and apply them.
